There must be something in the England Channel. First we had Obenewa with “He” and now our ears have fallen in love once again with a 19-year-old London songstress, Izzy Bizu, with “Diamonds.”
Per her SoundCloud profile:
“She grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Swan, Betty Wright and James Brown and draws on these alongside newer influences, Amy Winehouse and Adele to create a fusion of soul, funk, jazz and pop that sounds classic and brand spanking new all at once.”
“Diamonds” gives us that glimpse of the Swing era a la Ella Fitzgerald with Amy Winehouse soul. The results are satisfying, Gen X and Y can finally agree on something when searching the AM/FM dial.

There are times and moments when you totally loose your inner self. Even if you feel settled in your mind, if you actually had the clearest ideas of how something has to be and how the outer world has to turn and move. Maybe you know the feeling of being aware of your patterns and bad habits and even you think you already know so much about yourself and the people you see everyday…even then scary moments exist. Or better said – moments when you get scared by yourself. Maybe scared is the wrong term but you get surprised by your patterns that are always all around you and it seems like they are just waiting to get back control.
So what to do? Nothing :) Just watch yourself, be quiet, slow down and listen to this sweet song. Just now you realize how great life can be. Lying next to your loved one, the sun is your early morning call. Looking outside your window and over night someone just coloured all the trees. Press play, what do you see?

Obenewa’s “He” is dulcet in its tone, giving us a first taste of this London songstress. So the story goes, she was sick in bed when she started singing some lyrics a cappella, these lyrics would form “He,” the sultry record we have today. With an influx of DJ’s strutting their newest gadgets, Obenewa firmly puts her flag in the sand, letting us know that an emotionally and talented voice can still captivate an audience.
The debut track is deeply felt, where she talks about a break-up. It’s a fluid combination of soul, R&B, and snarl of rock. Of course, we are awaiting what else Obenewa has in production, with only one track up on SoundCloud Obenewa is poised to shake things up a bit.

The equivalent of a Neptunes (NERD/Pharrell) tune of the 00’s is this DOCO rework. Why? Hard hitting and chopped sounding sample – Check! Reworking of a talented white pop singer – Check! Making said white bwoy (gul) pop star sound bearable to the urban demographics (i apologize black people) and at the same time, making it sound cooler bc of said urban demographic twist and turn on the remix – Check! Using zeitgeisty soundboards of a popular style/genre w/o going to deep into said style (in this case twerk/trap) – Check!
Yep we got a hit on our hands – that i really like. Not a guilty pleasure – that’s reserved for you critics – but a legitimate prime time tune! Djs need to grab this here.
