Drippy Dolphin – Stronger

tumblr_nnc0m675Kt1rtfp9ho1_1280

Drippy Dolphin, where have you been? We’ll whatever body of water he or she’s been swimming in, we are glad he (or she’s) back. Rife with gun shots, Drippy takes on “Stronger” and “Hollerback Girl,” making for an intense Jersey Club turn-up. Drippy Dolphin, part of the #FOFOFADI crew, has released 2 tracks over the past year, each screwed with it’s own 90’s pop throughout. It’s fun, it doesn’t make sense, and it’s something to get up and dance too.

Drippy says he’s back, but we’ll see…

ALO WALA – Vibrate To Win EP

chrome tumblr

ALO WALA is on some next level ish. This EP, billed, as “Interplanetary,” gives us three tracks to party to, rage to, and to round it out, chill to. Reminiscent to “Dirty Vibe” by Skrillex, this mix mosh of a group featuring Punjabi-Indian rapper Shivani Ahlowalia and Danish bass producers Julius Sylvest and Copyflex, also known as the duo Copia Doble Systema (that’s a mouthful) hits with a sexy “I’m a Boss A** Bit**” vibe on “Texi Mexi.”

Round two takes reverb nation head-on with an Indian beat, making for all the workings for a dubious repeated sample not to be messed with.

If round one & two are like Goliath, then round three, “The Coconut” is like David, subtle and poised but ready to strike on an easy Sunday playlist. This track lays on the beach, where Brooklyn Shanti winds us down with relaxed vocals.

Gregory Porter – Liquid Spirit (Claptone Remix)

chrome tumblr photo

Claptone’s letting the music speak for itself, for he adorns his face with a “dazzling golden mask.” This magical mask gave this man a powerful and rare gift, see, something was bestowed on him, making music that offers another dimension.

Don’t believe me?

Check out “Cream,” a classic by the Wu-Tang Clan. Remixed too many times to count, Claptone took the signature tune and gave it a disciplined hand-over-hand rhythmic beat, never losing the signature drum pattern. He also showed off his prowess of production, adding in a stroke of the violin. But enough fawning over this remix, today, we bring you something new(ish). His remix of “Liquid Spirit” by Gregory Porter.

“Liquid Spirit” falls in the same category as “Cream.” Claptone takes the record on a well paced groove, dropping in timely placed vocal samples throughout that lingers for a couple extra seconds.

Be sure to check out both tracks below:

Big Wild – Aftergold

tumblr

Foreign Family Collective, ODESZA’s label, released their second single this week, Big Wild’s “Aftergold,” and it’s a snare hopping, vocal snippet journey through sounds. Big Wild has gained some gold stars the past 10 days, releasing a remix by Kodak to Graph, “IAMANTHEM”. In all, “Aftergold” beacons dance hall silly distorted vocals, juxtaposing the flutter of what we can only think of is a African thumb piano in the background.

“Aftergold” has a similar whipped up melody of Flume’s remix of “Hyperparidse” by Hermtiude, as both give us a complicated look at different tones and textures throughout. And comparing oneself to Flume is something not to be taken lightly.

Lion Babe – Wonder Woman (DJ Premier Remix)

tumblr

Certified OG DJ Premier put something chilly on Lion Babe’s “Wonder Woman.” Premo, a true #RealDJ, added some serious downtempo vibes throughout the track leaving the treasure that is Jillian Hervey space to breath. With that “You know it’s Premo” scratch throughout, we know he flexed on this track.

Interesting enough, DJ Premier has left the quintessential remix box before with his remix of “Latch” branching out and imploring us to rethink what a remix is. It’s not about how many bells and whistles you can throw on but the subtleness that makes “Wonder Woman” special.

Izzy Bizu – Diamonds

tumblr

There must be something in the England Channel. First we had Obenewa with “He” and now our ears have fallen in love once again with a 19-year-old London songstress, Izzy Bizu, with “Diamonds.”

Per her SoundCloud profile:

She grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Swan, Betty Wright and James Brown and draws on these alongside newer influences, Amy Winehouse and Adele to create a fusion of soul, funk, jazz and pop that sounds classic and brand spanking new all at once.”

“Diamonds” gives us that glimpse of the Swing era a la Ella Fitzgerald with Amy Winehouse soul. The results are satisfying, Gen X and Y can finally agree on something when searching the AM/FM dial.
